During all the years I was helping other people's loved ones, I was unable to give the same level of care to the person who inspired me to start this business - my Grandma Byer.
As you know, life can be busy and very time-consuming. My grandma lived at home, alone. While the family recognized signs and symptoms of dementia, we also knew that she did not want placed in a long term care setting. We tried very hard to honor that wish. However, our family had to make the difficult decision to place her in a care facility. We moved her into the facility where I worked.
It was very hard for her to make the transition. Initially, it increased her confusion and anxiety levels. Eventually, she acclimated. I enjoyed being able to see her daily, while at work. I cherish the years I was able to spend with her there. My grandma passed away on 1/31/2020.
While I loved caring for the thousands of people during my 20 years as a physical therapist assistant, I really wish I could have given my grandma her wish to stay at home. While I can’t go back and do that for her, I would like to be able to honor her, while helping your loved one stay at home for as long as possible. Like our slogan says, "We are home when you can’t be."
I have been licensed by the state of South Carolina as a Physical Therapist Assistant for 20 years and I’ve been a Rehabilitation Director for 16 of those years. For 16 years I’ve worked in Long Term Care facilities specializing in Dementia Care. I enjoy caring for my patients very much. It is an honor to help them, to be as independent as possible.
